Electrical invoices with the permit, the parts and the labor spelled out

From a single outlet repair to a 200-amp service upgrade, bill each part of the job on its own line.

Electrical work carries costs customers don't always expect: permit fees, inspection trips, utility coordination, and the licensed labor that code requires. An invoice that lists those separately looks professional and holds up if a homeowner or property manager asks why the bill came out the way it did.

Include your license number where your state or city requires it, the permit number for permitted work, and a short description of what was installed or replaced. For panel upgrades, EV charger circuits and remodels, start with a written estimate using the estimate maker and invoice against it once the inspection passes.

A residential service upgrade invoiced after final inspection, with the panel, materials, permit fee and licensed labor on separate lines.

What electricians invoice for

  • Panel and service upgrades

Bill the panel, breakers, meter base work, permit fee and labor separately, and note the inspection result.

  • EV charger and dedicated circuits

Show the wire run, breaker, disconnect and the charger install as distinct items, since customers often compare these quotes line by line.

  • Troubleshooting and repairs

Charge a diagnostic or service call fee plus time on site for tracing dead circuits, tripping breakers or flickering lights.

  • Remodel and new construction rough-in

Bill rough-in and trim-out as separate phases, matched to the general contractor's schedule.

What to put on a electrician invoice

Fields for a electrician invoice
FieldWhy it matters
Electrical license numberMany states and cities require it on estimates and invoices. It also reassures customers the work was done legally.
Permit numberLinks the invoice to the permitted job and makes it easy to reference if the inspector or homeowner asks.
Permit and inspection feesThese are pass-through costs. Listing them separately shows they aren't part of your labor rate.
Materials by itemPanels, breakers, wire and devices can add up fast. Itemizing them explains the total.
Labor with hours or flat rateMakes clear what the licensed work cost, separate from materials.
Inspection status"Final inspection passed 9/29" tells the customer the job is complete and signed off.

Billing tips

  • Don't bury the permit fee in your labor. Show it as a pass-through so the customer sees what the city charged.
  • Invoice after the inspection passes, and note the date. It closes the job cleanly.
  • Check your state's rules on putting your license number on estimates, invoices and vehicles, since requirements differ.
  • Save your common devices and services (GFCI install, breaker replacement, service call) as reusable items so pricing stays consistent.

Electricians: invoicing questions

Do electricians have to put their license number on invoices?

Many states and some cities require it on contracts, estimates or advertising, and it's good practice even where it isn't required. Check your state licensing board's rules.

Should I bill the permit fee to the customer?

Most electricians pass the permit and inspection cost through to the customer, either at cost or with a small handling fee. Whatever your policy, mention it in the estimate and list it separately on the invoice.

How do I invoice a job that failed inspection?

Correcting your own work to pass inspection is usually on you. If the failure came from something outside your scope, like an existing condition the customer asked you to leave, bill that correction separately and explain it on the invoice.

Is sales tax charged on electrical materials?

Often yes, while labor rules vary. Some states treat contractors as the final consumer of materials and tax them at purchase instead. Check with your state's revenue department or an accountant.
